Power, money, politics, fear, love, and the law.
I've often thought about the difference between morals, truth, and the law. I think that many people view them as the same thing, or seek some kind of unity between them. People shelter under an immoral regime, with some half baked sense of morality, yet aren't prepared to break the laws of an unjust society. At what point, we have to ask ourselves, do we actually do just that: break the law? At what point do we lie because we know that a system or government or business is corrupt? When do we put our moral duty above that of the law, or disregard the law out of a perceived necessity? We surely can't spend our lives under an umbrella of legality whilst we're part of a corruption far greater. At least we can't once we've become aware of such a thing.
So does it all come down to awarness? Is that what makes us "good" or "bad", or even indifferent?
Isn't the thing that drives one man to be rich the same as what drives another man to lie? Isn't it fear? Surely it is. When we have power, we have the means to make change occur in the physical world.
I think this subject could now go just about anywhere...
But the subject of the law is an interesting one. I think I used to view the law as being something designed as an all encompassing mediator of fairness, whereas I realise, now, that it's just a tool used in battle between people. And that the law doesn't really study the truth at all, per se, but puts the truth in a certain light, if it can, that benefits an individual at the expense of another, regardless of any moral correctness.
Whereas I used to regard the law as moral, I realise that it is, in fact, simply amoral. It's as potentially damaging to the moral climate as it is beneficial.
If that makes any sense.
And politics, it's cousin, is just the same. Politics requires putting the politician in a certain light. The true subject of concern in politics is the politician, and not the voter. Which is why unpopular but moral or honest issues aren't regarded by a politician, but merely the opinion of the masses, regardless of the actual value of their beliefs or morality.
At the root of all the above, again, is fear. Rarely is it love.
But I'm back on the old "love is dangerous" road once more...
