I can't help thinking how ironic it is that we end up resenting the people we've manipulated into needing us. By disempowering someone, or encouraging their self-disempowerment, we're bound to become resentful.
But manipulating people into some kind of neediness is a common tactic. We do it so that we have power over someone who'd otherwise be free. In that way, the moment we get someone we already want them less than we did.
