I've been thinking about this business of "Identity Theft" and how the general public have been conned into believing it's their responsibility.
Let's look at what goes on with "identity theft": a thief takes money or products or services from an institution, business or individuals, and pretends to be someone else. That person takes the money by deception. The other party - the business, credit card company, loan company or whatever - gives that individual money or stuff in the belief the thief is who they say they are.
Now I have to ask: whose responsibility is it to make certain they're giving the money to the right party? If Joe Smith comes along to me, waves some ID at me, and I make the mistake of believing he's who he says he is, who's fault is that? Is it mine, or the person he's pretending to be?
By my reckoning, it's my fault, for not being certain.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS IDENTITY THEFT. All it is is sloppy security on the part of those lending. What's being stolen is THE MONEY, PRODUCT OR SERVICE. Nothing more than that.
It's important to understand that. Because, once more, the corporations have us by the throat. Not only do they charge an arm and a leg for their services, but they're trying to make us accountable for their own mistakes.
If the lender or seller is more careful about who he lends or sells to, then we have no such problem as "identity theft". Besides, you can't steal an identity.
